The Hugh Hamilton Wines is acclaimed as Australia’s oldest wine family. “Hugh Hamilton is the 5th generation of the Australian Hamilton dynasty.” In 1837, “Hugh’s great, great grandfather came to South Australia and planted what were the first vines in the new colony and made the first wine here.” (source: HughHamiltonWines) This makes the Hugh Hamilton Wines 180 years old this year.

It is just a 30 minutes drive from SA’s capital – Adelaide City. Thus, visitors who love to see the wine regions of Adelaide but don’t have enough days to spare may be delighted to take the McLaren Vale Winery Tours for half a day.
Our Hugh Hamilton Wines Cellar Door Visit
Arriving at the vineyard, you will be welcomed by a VIP Patina driveway of pencil pine trees
leading up to the Cellar glass building or Tasting Room with a view.
Going inside you walk up past the black sheep and walk into the Tasting Room.
Anywhere seated, the view is absolutely beautiful! With the picturesque McLaren Vale around you, the ambience is just fabulous.
For us, a visit to this gorgeous cellar is a must when you’re around McLaren Vale.
For the kids and adults alike, it was delightful to see buds of growing grapefruits on the vines. Their varietals include Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot among many others. It was officially Spring in September when we visited here. After a few weeks then in October was the harvest season.
They also grow olives in the area. It was quite interesting for us as we would have loved to see some olives on the trees. Just maybe next time.
When you come here, I am pretty sure that you will love this stunning place. You won’t know that the whole vineyard is a 180 years old heritage.
The place is free for visitors to come by except for the wine tasting. Wine tasting costs $20 for six varieties of wine and a cheese plate or just $15 without cheese. Make sure, though, that if you are a group of 7 or more that you book in advance. Otherwise, a group of 6 adults or less are welcome to drop by anytime.
