The Nepenthe Winery in the Adelaide Hills is just stunningly beautiful! Located just twenty-five minutes away from the city of Adelaide by car and about eight minutes from Hahndorf, I recommend that you visit this place when around town.

Adelaide Hills Cellar Door
Adelaide has always been known as the city of beautiful wine cellar doors and white beaches. Underrated in Australia as the quiet city south, but the truth is – its gems lie in the Hills, Shorelines and Towns that are a short drive away from the city.
We have been to the north in Barossa as well as the south in Mclaren Vale wine regions. Yet, this is our first time to visit a winery in the east of Adelaide – the Adelaide Hills.
There are actually a number of great cellar doors here in the Adelaide Hills. Among those worth mentioning are – Hahndorf Hill Winery, Bird in Hand Winery in Woodside, Shaw + Smith, Barristers Block Wines, The Lane Vineyard and about 25 other cellar doors more.
Of all those we visited so far, the most fascinating cellar door we have been to just yet is The Nepenthe Winery in Balhannah.
Best Adelaide Hills Winery – Nepenthe
I believe each winery has its own beauty that is incomparable to another. Yet, what made this place stunning is the breathtaking view you get for free that will make you appreciate nature at its finest.
The moment you enter the cellar door
going towards their Cellar Door / Tasting Room Shed,
the vast array of grapevines planted on the magnificent hills is absolutely gorgeous!
The lake at the foot of the hills and the chains of green hills are a work of nature’s art.
Seeing all the wild kangaroos playing all around and hopping everywhere is an experience we will not forget.
The joey lingering on their mummy Kangaroos tummy is truly a sight to behold.
We were indeed inspired by them that we can’t help but play chase altogether.
The huge green grass area around us made us do so. After all, you can freely lounge on the rustic benches and wooden table thereafter. This is even great for a family picnic.
After which, my dad and husband had to buy some of his favourite dessert wine inside the wine shed/tasting room.
They have Altitude and Pinnacle Wine selections that are internationally renowned as top range wines including their Petraea Sauvignon Blanc, Ithaca Chardonnay, The Good Doctor Pinot Noir and the Gate Bloc Shiraz.
Then we headed home.
Overall, I do recommend everyone to visit here when in Adelaide or when you’re planning a trip to Hahndorf.
Recharge your spirit here with the views of nature. You might be lucky, like us, to play with some kangaroos wildly hopping around.
Coming here is free and no need to book when you are just a small group of three or four.
Lastly, this is just a short drive away from the Melba’s Chocolate Factory and the Beerenberg Strawberry Farm too. You might as well visit these two places all in a day. Read our experiences in these places through the link.
